
Eligibility Requirements
Before applying, make sure you meet the following criteria:
- Age:
- 16 years for two-wheelers (Category A/K – scooter, bike, moped)
- 18 years for light vehicles (Category B – car, van, jeep)
- 21 years for heavy vehicles (Category C/D/E – bus, truck, tractor, etc.)
- Citizenship: Nepali citizenship certificate is required.
- Health: You must be medically fit; a color blindness test is included in the screening.
Step 1: Online Application
- Visit the official DoTM portal: applydlnew.dotm.gov.np
- Create an account with your mobile number.
- Fill in your personal and citizenship details.
- Upload scanned documents (citizenship).
- Choose your preferred Transport Management Office (TMO) and book an appointment.
- Print the application form and payment voucher.
Step 2: Biometric Verification
On your appointment day, visit the selected TMO with:
- Printed application and voucher.
- Original citizenship card.
At the office:
- Your photo, fingerprints, and signature will be recorded.
- A medical check (including color blindness test) is done.
- Pay the written exam fee and collect your admit card.
Step 3: Written Exam
- The test usually happens the day after biometrics.
- Format: 20 multiple-choice questions on traffic rules, road signs, and basic mechanics.
- Passing score: 60% pass mark is required for the written driving license exam, while the practical test (trial) requires a score of 70% or higher.
- Results: Usually published the same day at the TMO or via SMS/online.
Step 4: Practical Driving Test (Trial)
If you pass the written exam, you move on to the practical trial.
- Test tasks include:
- Driving on an 8-shaped track
- Uphill slope test
- Reverse driving
- Parking skills and lane discipline
- Vehicles: You may bring your own or rent near the trial center or trail center provide the vehicles.
- Attempts: You get up to 3 chances within 90 days.
Step 5: License Fees & Collection
- After passing the trial, pay the final license fee (varies by vehicle type).
- You’ll receive a temporary slip that acts as a valid driving license.
- The smart card license will be ready in a few weeks/months, and you’ll get an SMS when it’s available for pickup.
Tips & Common Challenges
- Apply early: Online quotas fill up very fast—try in the morning.
- Beware of scams: Only use the official DoTM website.
- Be prepared: Study traffic rules, signs, and practice with mock tests to increase your chances of passing.
- Bring documents: Carry your citizenship, photocopies, and blood group info.
